On Cloud Nine! Celebrating 9 years of Comma Sense
I have entered my 10th year of being my own boss. How did that happen? The 9th anniversary passed very quietly back in January when we were away on our now annual tradition of a new year holiday (it really is a brilliant way to begin the year, I highly recommend it). I returned from our trip to Andalucia full of energy and optimism for the year ahead. 25 is our family’s lucky number, so I had a sneaky suspicion that 2025 would be happy and successful on every front.
Then life, health issues, and client work got in the way of me gathering my thoughts to write this post to celebrate 9 glorious years of Comma Sense. Now I’ve found the headspace, I’ll begin.
Achieving my goals
In 2024, I pledged to do more of the work I love. Workwise this happened when I gained a new client. For eight months I wrote regular blogs and extended guide content for them on the subject of employee engagement. It’s a topic I know and understand well from my days working in internal communications.
I also helped three clients into new roles with refreshed CVs and LinkedIn profiles. One of the best things about writing this kind of content is that the results can be life-changing. It’s a real privilege to be able to make that kind of impact on someone else’s life.
I’m happy to have another three CV clients booked in for the first half of the year. It’s rewarding work that I’d like to do more of. If you have a friend or relative who is facing redundancy, starting out in their career, or simply looking for their next challenge, please point them in my direction.
On a personal level, 2024 was a tough year with the loss of a family member. I’ve never been more thankful for the flexibility of my work. I was able to travel to support my husband and still meet client deadlines during a super challenging time.
My new website went live!
By far my proudest achievement of 2024 was launching my new website. I credit Paula Cohen’s Accountability Squad with motivating and supporting me to get there. The twice weekly setting of intentions and checking in on progress spurred me on to take small steps to creating my site. I highly recommend joining the group if you have business development actions you never get round to doing.
Her business planning days are also excellent for getting your thoughts and ideas in order and into an achievable, structured plan. I joined them three times last year and came away brimming with ideas and knowing what actions I needed to take to make them a reality.
My copywriting portfolio
After launching my website in Spring, I spent the second part of the year adding new client case studies to my portfolio. This section was one of my non-negotiables with the new website. I wanted to share real-life client experiences to help prospective clients make informed decisions to use my services. And it’s working well!
I’m seeing more organic traffic and enquiries than ever. Prospective clients can find answers to their questions on my website, which has reduced the number of intro calls I’m doing. My website is now something I am proud to share and promote, and it showcases the content best practice I am renown for.
The best decision I made was to move from a single page site to a multi-page site. Taking this step has not only provided me with a bigger platform to showcase my work, it has also improved my Google ranking.
Website copywriting and creative projects
I know people love to hear about the random subjects I write about, and 2024 did not disappoint! Tree surgery, garden landscaping, engineering machinery, nutrition, personal styling, and sales training courses were amongst the website copywriting I enjoyed getting stuck into.
Themes of HR, selling businesses, leadership development, and the care sector are amongst my regular clients for blog, newsletter and case study copywriting.
My proudest moment of 2024 was completing a Quality Account report for St Joseph’s Hospice in Merseyside. It was the first time they had created such a document and I worked closely with the chief executive to research and write a valuable resource that demonstrates the charity’s impact to key stakeholders and potential funders. Their fabulous feedback made me and my skills feel valued and appreciated.
On the creative copywriting side, I was part of a small creative team put together by Jo Grubb to work on the rebrand and key messaging for Down’s Syndrome Manchester. My work helped the charity to gain clarity and consistency with their messaging and use it to connect with their various audiences.
What’s in store for 2025?
2025 has started well, with two new clients onboarded for monthly blog and newsletter content. My aim this year is to make my copywriting services as accessible as possible. If you’re one of those business owners who struggles to understand how I can support you and what I can help you achieve, I’m developing some content bundles to show what services you can get at different price points. More details to come on those later this year.
I also want to share all the content creation tips, advice and explainers I’ve amassed over the years to help you improve your customer and employee comms. My first tip, by way of this blog, is to celebrate your achievements - big or small - and share them with others. I guarantee that sharing your accomplishments will not only put a smile on your face, it will inspire others to achieve their own.
